Horse Riding in Southland, New Zealand
Enjoy a high country South Island horseback adventure with a day trip from Tikana Lodge.
An 18,000 acre high country station is the backdrop to this horseback adventure. The exhilaration of the day's riding is enhanced by the diversity of the high country scenery and with your personal guide Lynn Minty, being one of the station owners makes for an unforgettable New Zealand experience. www.beaumontexperience.co.nz
Lynn and Struan Minty have owned and farmed Beaumont Station for the last 25 years but it was one of the first runs taken up in Southland with records showing it has been farmed since 1850. In those early days there were little or no fences and boundaries riders were employed to keep the sheep within the station boundaries. Flecks Hut, visited on the day ride, was named after one such Irishman who lived there with his family in the mid 1800’s. Presently the station winters around 12,000 sheep, 800 Hereford cattle and 100 Red Deer.
Trekking through green pastures, South Island beech forest and native bush then onto rolling tussock hill country – the panoramic views will take your breath away. You and your mount can have a well earned rest at the historic century old Fleck’s Hut. Enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch and have a cup of “billy tea”.
Horses are available to suit all abilities from beginners to experienced riders.
The day trip start point is a 45 minute drive from Tikana.
